Cost & funding

Fees depend on the service, the provider and the length of the session. Ask each provider for their fees before the first visit.

If your child's NDIS plan includes behaviour support, you can use it to pay a behaviour support practitioner. For a psychologist, Medicare pays a rebate for some sessions when your GP writes a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a referral first.

If your child has an NDIS plan that includes these supports, you can use it. If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, you can also use providers that are not NDIS registered. If the NDIA manages your plan, you must use registered providers.

What to expect at the start

  1. Agreement

An NDIS-registered practitioner makes a service agreement with you and gets to know your child and, if you agree, the people around them.

  2. Interim plan

Within one month they should write an interim plan to keep everyone safe in the short term.

  3. Full plan

They work out why the behaviour happens and should write the full behaviour support plan within 6 months. It is reviewed at least every year.
