  • Our approach

Understanding Minds uses a genuine, evidence-based approach that looks beyond diagnosis to understand the whole person, including family and environmental influences. Sessions focus on personalised strategies tailored to each child and family rather than one-size-fits-all solutions. The team emphasises family and partner involvement throughout, recognising that understanding a child's behaviour and learning requires considering multiple influences in their life. This approach aims to be genuinely helpful and empowering, moving beyond just identifying a problem to creating meaningful, sustainable change.

  • Working with families

The practice actively promotes family and partner involvement as part of its core approach, believing that understanding a child requires consideration of their family and environment. Support is designed to be personalised to each family's needs and circumstances. The team works with parents and carers to develop specific attitudes and strategies that suit their individual situation rather than applying generic advice.

  • Meet the team

Understanding Minds is led by Dr Craig Wright, one of Australia's leading practitioners in learning and behavioural psychology who founded the practice in 2004 after working in the public sector for Disability Services. Both practitioners have extensive experience working in schools and with government departments, and have published research in scientific journals. The team offers child and adolescent psychology, clinical psychology, assessments, behavioural support, and educational psychology services at two Gold Coast clinics or via telehealth.
