  • Our approach

Thompson Psychology draws on a range of evidence-based modalities tailored to each person's needs and goals, including Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR, DBT, CBT, Somatic Therapy, Play Therapy, and Art-Informed approaches. Sessions are warm and accessible, with flexibility to adapt the environment—whether that means no pressure for eye contact, movement-friendly sessions, sensory tools, or flexible seating. The practice prioritises creating a comfortable, workable space where children and teens can express themselves safely through creative and play-based methods when appropriate.

  • Working with families

For children aged 0–12, the practice uses a highly parent-involved model based on research showing that one hour of therapy with a parent can be as effective as 80 hours of direct work with a child. Parents should expect dedicated sessions focused on adjusting approaches, advocating for your child, and applying strategies at home. Communication happens via email or SMS, and the psychologist liaisons with schools, GPs, and other stakeholders to support your child's wellbeing across settings.

  • Meet the team

Thompson Psychology is run by Bec, a registered psychologist who graduated from James Cook University in 2016 and has spent nearly a decade working across a wide range of mental health areas. Bec identifies as a neurodivergent psychologist with a special interest in evidence-informed approaches and lived experience, and brings LGBTQI+ affirming and disability-affirming values to her practice.

  • Your first visit

The initial appointment lasts 90 minutes total (80 minutes direct therapy and 10 minutes for assessment, formulation, and treatment planning). During this time, the psychologist gathers information about your child's presentation, develops an understanding of their needs, and outlines an initial treatment plan. For children aged 0–12, expect that parent sessions will be a significant part of the work, with some sessions focused solely on you to discuss strategies, approaches, and how to support your child at home.
