  • Our approach

Nurturing Start uses a holistic, family-centred approach that nurtures each child's uniqueness within their own environment. Sessions are tailored to the individual child's needs and goals, with therapy delivered across clinic, home, school, or community settings depending on what's important for your family. The therapist works collaboratively with parents, recognising that you know your child best, to develop strategies that encourage and empower your child to achieve realistic goals. Sessions focus on areas such as motor skills, sensory and emotional regulation, handwriting, self-care, and cognitive skills like organisation and planning. The occupational therapist also provides school observations and consultations when needed, and maintains regular communication with other therapy teams to ensure coordinated support.

  • Working with families

Parents and caregivers are central to the therapy process and are involved from the start through the initial appointment where goals are identified together. The therapist sends session notes to caregivers following each appointment and works collaboratively with you to develop strategies that work for your family. Regular communication with other therapy teams is encouraged to ensure everyone is working together to support your family. The family-centred approach recognises that as the parent, you know your own child best and that strategies must fit within your family's everyday environment and routines.

  • Your first visit

The initial appointment consists of a 90-minute block, with the first 60 minutes conducted with parents and caregivers only, usually via video or phone call. This allows for a thorough discussion of your concerns and your child's background without impacting the positive relationship you want to build. You may be asked to complete questionnaires and identify goals for your family. The therapist then takes 30 minutes after your appointment for planning, preparing resources, and completing notes. At your first therapy session, your child will complete further assessment and begin building a safe relationship with the therapist, allowing the therapy plan to be tailored to your child and family's specific needs.
