  • Our approach

This Way Up offers online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) through self-paced, illustrated modules that teach evidence-based strategies using stories of recovering individuals, practical workbooks, and targeted exercises. The programs are designed to mimic the education, skills and strategies you would learn from a mental health professional in face-to-face therapy, helping you develop practical techniques for managing anxiety, depression, insomnia and other mental health conditions. You can complete three to eight modules over 90 days at your own pace, with a five-day break between modules to practise your new skills. The approach focuses on changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that maintain symptoms, building lasting confidence and resilience rather than offering temporary fixes.

  • Meet the team

This Way Up is led by eminent psychiatrist Dr Mike Millard and staffed by clinical psychologists and researchers. The organisation operates as part of the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD), a joint facility of St Vincent's Hospital and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) established in 1964. The team also includes web technicians who support the digital platform. While specific clinician qualifications beyond their professional registration are not detailed on the website, the programs have been developed and validated through over 120 randomised controlled trials and academic studies conducted by these experts.

  • Your first visit

After creating a free account, you select and enrol in an appropriate treatment program based on your specific mental health needs or by taking an anonymous online assessment. You then receive immediate access (or via clinician prescription) and begin the program at your own pace by completing the first module online. If working with a clinician, they can monitor your progress and wellbeing scores through a secure dashboard, though the program itself is self-directed with automated emails and reminders sent throughout. There is no traditional appointment—the program is accessed entirely online and you work through it independently or with clinician support depending on how you've enrolled.
