  • Our approach

New Directions Psychology uses a collaborative, tailored approach rather than one-size-fits-all therapy. Psychologists draw on evidence-based therapeutic modalities including EMDR, DBT, Schema Therapy, and CBT, selecting techniques suited to each child's unique needs and presenting problems. Sessions are delivered in a friendly, relaxed environment designed to help children feel comfortable and supported. The practice emphasises understanding each child's strengths and barriers before developing a plan, with clinicians taking time after the initial session to customise therapy to suit your child's specific situation.

  • Working with families

The practice values family involvement and collaboration. Clinicians work closely with parents and carers as part of the child's support network. Susan George specifically offers practical, collaborative parenting support and problem-solving sessions for families. The NDIS psychology pages note that the service works closely with families to understand unique needs and achieve positive outcomes. Individual clinicians can be contacted directly to discuss how they involve parents in their approach to your child's care.

  • Meet the team

The team includes three registered and clinical psychologists. Susan George is a Registered Psychologist with expertise in trauma, ADHD/ASD, and chronic pain management, offering practical parenting support. Rikki Maynard is a Clinical Psychologist (Master's qualified) with experience across community mental health, disability, and schools, trained in EMDR, DBT, Schema therapy, and CBT. Yashica Somana is a Registered Psychologist with 15 years' experience and a background in school teaching, skilled in CBT, DBT, Schema Therapy, IPT, and EFT. All three work across the lifespan and welcome neurodivergent clients and diverse backgrounds.

  • Your first visit

During the first session, your child's psychologist will get to know them and learn about their history, including current and previous mental health issues, family background, medical history, and personal circumstances. This initial session is about understanding your child and building rapport in a warm, respectful environment. After this first session, the psychologist will take time to tailor therapy to your child's specific needs rather than applying a standard approach. Most families notice benefits from treatment within a few sessions, and your psychologist will book the next appointment and provide a reminder card at the conclusion of each visit.
