  • Our approach

Psychoanalysis works by creating a space to speak freely and listen closely to what emerges in your child's words, patterns and life. Rather than offering quick strategies or generic advice, this approach takes the unconscious, desire and the unique nature of each young person's difficulties seriously. Through preliminary sessions, your child can explore what's brought them to treatment and clarify their symptoms in a calm, respectful environment. The work uses free association—saying whatever comes to mind—to help patterns and conflicts become visible, which can often shift when insight or effort alone haven't worked. Over time, this can allow a different relationship to difficulties to emerge and create the possibility of change.

  • Working with families

Families are central to the work, with a focus on collaboration between the practitioner, parents, carers, teachers and GPs where appropriate. Your involvement in your child's care is valued, and the practice creates space to support understanding and change in partnership with you. Communication with other professionals involved in your child's care can occur when suitable, ensuring everyone is working together toward the same goals. The practice welcomes referrals from all professionals and maintains open lines of communication throughout treatment.

  • Meet the team

Myles Medwell is a Clinical Psychologist with qualifications including BA(Psych), GradDip(Psych), MPsych(Clinical) and is accredited with AMACPA and FND Australia. With experience spanning school environments, clinical settings and rural communities, Myles offers both therapy and psychological assessments thoughtfully tailored to each child's developmental stage and individual needs. The practice works collaboratively with families, teachers and GPs where appropriate to support young people. Referrals are welcome from GPs, psychiatrists, neurologists and allied health professionals, and liaison with other treating practitioners is available to support each child's care.

  • Your first visit

The work begins with preliminary sessions where your child has a space to speak about what's brought them to treatment, aspects of their history and the difficulties they're struggling with. These are not simply introductory meetings, but the beginning of the work itself. Over the course of these sessions, it becomes possible to clarify something of your child's symptom, what they're seeking from treatment and how the work may need to proceed. The preliminary sessions also help determine whether psychoanalysis is the right treatment and what form the work should take. You're welcome to book preliminary sessions and consider whether this is the right fit for your family.
