Our approach
Therapy at Mindspan Clinic draws from a range of evidence-based approaches tailored to your child's or teen's specific needs and preferences. Dr. Amy integrates cognitive behavioural therapy, trauma-focused CBT, schema therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based techniques to help young people gain insight into their difficulties and learn new skills to manage them. Sessions maintain a balance between building understanding and developing practical strategies, creating a warm and supportive space where your child can explore their concerns at their own pace. The approach is collaborative, meaning your preferences and goals are central to how therapy unfolds. Both face-to-face and online sessions are available to suit your family's needs.
Working with families
Family involvement is an important part of therapy when appropriate. With your consent, Dr. Amy liaises with other professionals involved in your child's care—such as school counsellors, psychiatrists, or other doctors—to ensure coordinated support. Family sessions can be included as an adjunct to your child's individual therapy when helpful for particular concerns. Parent management training and parenting support are also available as specific approaches for families managing challenging behaviours. Regular communication helps ensure that therapy aligns with what's happening at home and school, and that you're involved as partners in supporting your child's progress.
Meet the team
Mindspan Clinic is led by Dr. Amy Li, a clinical psychologist with extensive qualifications and experience in child and adolescent mental health. She holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours), a Master of Clinical Psychology, and a PhD from the University of New South Wales, and is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Dr. Amy has previously worked in university clinics, public mental health services including the SLHD Rivendell Child, Adolescent, and Family Mental Health Service, and currently works at a specialist anxiety clinic. She is a member of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association, the Anxiety Practitioners Network, and the Australian Association for Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy, and is an approved supervisor for the next generation of psychologists.
Your first visit
The first session is a 50-minute clinical assessment designed to understand your child and their needs thoroughly. Dr. Amy will ask about your child's current difficulties, personal and family history, any previous treatment, and what you hope to achieve through therapy. Your child may be asked to complete additional questionnaires about their experiences and symptoms to give a fuller picture. At the end of the session, Dr. Amy will discuss treatment options with you, including which therapeutic approach might work best and how frequently sessions should occur. This meeting sets the foundation for therapy and ensures everyone is working towards the same goals.
