  • Our approach

Mind Matters Cairns takes a holistic, integrative approach to mental health, meaning sessions address the whole person—mind, body, relationships and community. Beyond traditional talk therapies, the practice specialises in brain-based therapies including Neurofeedback, Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation, Light and Sound Therapy, and Auditory Training, tailoring treatment to each person's individual needs and personality. Therapists offer a range of evidence-based psychological approaches such as CBT, EMDR, Schema Therapy, ACT, Narrative Therapy and Sandplay, allowing clients to have a say in which treatment they receive after the initial consultation. Sessions emphasise working collaboratively with the child, their family, school and other professionals to support wellbeing from multiple angles. The practice encourages clients to make healthy lifestyle choices and recognises how past experiences shape current brain and nervous system functioning.

  • Working with families

The practice actively encourages a collaborative approach, working with the systems around the child including family, school and medical professionals to optimise wellbeing. Therapists like Marijke actively seek a team approach and encourage schools to work with them on their client's learning journey. Parents and carers are kept informed and involved in planning their child's care. The practice values the interconnection between mind, body, relationships and community, supporting families to make healthy lifestyle choices together. You can contact the team by phone (07 4031 0438), email or in person at either of their two locations during standard hours.

  • Meet the team

The team includes multiple registered psychologists with 20+ years' experience, all holding bachelor degrees in psychology and additional qualifications. Nia Barnes is trained in qEEG assessments, neurofeedback, tDCS and clinical hypnosis; Marijke Keller specialises in psycho-educational assessments and has deep knowledge of school systems; and Liz Latchford brings extensive experience with foster care, trauma and family relationships. The practice also employs provisional psychologists, counsellors, occupational therapists (Emily Hayward and Max Walton), a neurofeedback therapist, and an allied health practitioner, each bringing specialised skills in areas like Interactive Metronome Training, PEERS social skills programs and positive psychology. All staff are trained in trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches.
