Our approach
Sessions are tailored to your needs and drawn from psychoanalytic, attachment, and cognitive-behavioural approaches. In individual 50-minute consultations, you discuss whatever you'd like within agreed goals or exploratory work. Short-term focused therapy suits straightforward problems or limited resources, often using practical problem-solving and skills-building. Longer psychodynamic work explores deeper patterns and past experiences, allowing unconscious dynamics to come to consciousness so you can feel and think differently about your life. Your therapist works at your pace—weekly, fortnightly, or twice weekly—as determined in your first sessions so it fits your goals and resources.
Meet the team
The practice is run by Karen McCreary, a Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology and Master of Clinical Psychology from the University of Western Australia, certification in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (2010), and advanced training in AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Levels 1-2, 2021-2022). She is a member of the Association of Clinical Psychologists Australia, Australian Psychological Society, and AEDP Institute.
Your first visit
At your first appointment, an intake bundle is sent beforehand to get started. Your therapist undertakes a treatment assessment, develops a preliminary diagnosis, and recommends a treatment plan tailored to your situation—this may take one or more meetings depending on complexity. Formal psychometric testing is sometimes indicated and will be discussed fully so you understand why. Your therapist shares their understanding with you and makes recommendations, and you decide whether you're ready to proceed. Sessions start on time, and you pay on the day unless another arrangement is made.
