Our approach

Kooky Clinic uses a neuro-affirming, evidence-based approach focused on thorough assessment and diagnosis. The primary model is the Hype! Model, which uses General Practitioners with Special Interests (GPwSIs) supported by specialist paediatricians and psychiatrists through multidisciplinary case conferencing. Sessions involve in-person appointments with a GPwSI where they assess your child, supported by detailed information you and teachers provide beforehand. Psychosocial interventions are the preferred first-line treatment option, with medication prescribed only when required. The approach prioritises understanding and supporting the whole family, recognising that a child's diagnosis often raises questions for parents too.

Working with families

Parents and carers are centrally involved throughout the assessment process. You provide detailed information before each appointment, and teachers are contacted to share observations about your child's behaviour and development. The GPwSI will be transparent with you about their impressions and recommendations after your appointments, explaining what they think is happening and what the next steps will be. The clinic recognises that supporting children with neurodevelopmental and behavioural health needs means caring for the whole family, and they work to ensure their team can support parents who may have their own questions and experiences following their child's diagnosis.

Meet the team

The team includes General Practitioners with Special Interests (GPwSIs) who have broad primary care expertise plus additional training in assessing and diagnosing ADHD and neurodevelopmental concerns, Developmental Paediatricians, General Paediatricians, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, General Psychiatrists, and a Clinical Psychologist. These clinicians work together through multidisciplinary case conferencing to support diagnosis and management. The team is passionate about evidence-based, neuro-affirming care and includes members with lived experience of neurodiversity. All clinicians are committed to thorough assessment and ruling out other conditions like autism, anxiety and depression before confirming diagnoses.

Your first visit

Your family starts on a waitlist, and when it's your turn, you'll have two in-person appointments with a General Practitioner with Special Interests (GPwSI). Before each appointment, you'll complete detailed information forms, and teachers will provide input about your child's behaviour and development. During these appointments, the GPwSI will assess your child and gather information to either make a provisional diagnosis or plan further assessment if other conditions need to be explored. After the second appointment, the GPwSI will share their impressions and recommendations with you clearly. The information from these appointments then goes to a multidisciplinary case-conference where a paediatrician or child psychiatrist joins to discuss your child's case and confirm diagnosis and treatment plans.
