Our approach
At Kids+Community, occupational therapy focuses on helping your child or teen engage in the everyday activities that matter to them—the things they want, need or are expected to do, and importantly, the things that bring them joy. The service addresses a wide range of challenges through a combination of skill development, environmental modifications and task adjustments, while also working with others to shift attitudes and build better understanding of your child. Sessions are tailored and can take place one-on-one with intensive focus on specific goals, or within group programs that offer supportive social settings for making connections and problem-solving together. The approach recognises that every child is unique, with their own set of occupations and challenges depending on their age, family context and community.
Working with families
Family involvement is central to the service—the team works with parents and carers throughout the process to decide what challenges exist and problem-solve how best to overcome them. The service offers coaching for parents and carers to build their capacity in meeting their child's needs, and provides both face-to-face and online forums where families and carers can connect, share ideas and access resources together. This collaborative approach emphasises that progress happens best when families are actively engaged and supported.
Your first visit
The Getting Started process begins when you contact the service, and the team will gather some basics to help you get started. You'll then have a Getting Started Meeting where you connect with the service to discuss your child or teen's needs. After that, there's a chance for the team and your family to get to know each other so they can create a plan that is truly targeted to your needs before therapy begins.
