  • Our approach

HMHK Psychology uses evidence-based, strengths-based and person-centered approaches, including therapeutic modalities such as CBT, ACT, EFT and self-compassion therapy. Sessions are tailored to each person's unique developmental needs, whether working with children, teenagers, young people, or families. The practice is grounded in empowerment and collaboration, with a commitment to affirming clients as experts of their own experience. Most therapy is provided online via telehealth, creating accessible and inclusive care that respects the diversity of each individual's journey. The team recognises neurodivergence, disability, gender diversity and other aspects of identity as integral to who clients are.

  • Working with families

HMHK recognises the pivotal role of parents, caregivers and family networks in supporting children and young people. The practice offers family-focused support that works together toward shared understanding and improved communication, helping to create nurturing environments. Families are supported in navigating and advocating within educational, medical and social systems, and the team affirms diverse family structures including chosen family. Beyond individual therapy, HMHK provides New Diagnosis Support to help clients and their families understand diagnoses thoroughly and develop confidence in advocating for necessary accommodations. Jo Knight specifically assists families in navigating complex application processes and acts as a liaison in educational or workplace settings to ensure clear communication of assessment results and recommended supports.

  • Meet the team

HMHK is led by Emerson Osterberg, a Clinical, Educational, and Developmental Psychologist with over 15 years of experience supporting young people, families and diverse communities, who brings lived experience as a neurodivergent, non-binary and queer individual. Jo Knight, a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience in Australia and Canada, specialises in person-centered assessments and has extensive professional development in this area. Jo is described as warm and empathetic, skilled at creating reassuring environments and tailoring reports to each individual's unique needs, and assists families with complex applications such as NDIS and Centrelink. Together, they bring expertise in clinical work, assessment, advocacy, trauma-informed practice and support for LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent communities.

  • Your first visit

At a first appointment or initial assessment, HMHK conducts a comprehensive evaluation that may include various assessment techniques and tools depending on your child's needs. The assessments are designed to provide diagnostic clarity while being therapeutic and helpful for all involved, drawing on multiple sources to build a holistic picture. Face-to-face assessments are available when needed, though most therapy is delivered online. Following the assessment, HMHK provides written reports that are individualised and presented in an accessible manner, along with ongoing support to help families understand the findings and develop confidence in advocating for necessary accommodations at school, work or home.
