  • Our approach

Excelsis Psychology's counselling approach is informed by current scientific evidence, focusing on equipping children and teens with practical strategies to flourish across emotional, social, physical, relational, behavioural, spiritual and academic wellbeing. Sessions identify and build on each child's unique individual strengths. Parents attend an initial parent intake session or join their child in the first counselling session, after which one-on-one sessions begin once everyone feels comfortable with the process. The approach is collaborative and solution-focused, designed to help clients learn, grow and excel in all areas of life.

  • Working with families

Parents play an integral role in the counselling process, beginning with attendance at a parent intake session or the child's first counselling session. Parents receive regular feedback, strategies and advice to help support their child or teen at home. Confidentiality is maintained during children's individual sessions, with exceptions only when the child's safety is at risk or when the parent needs to be involved to reinforce strategies. When sensitive matters need to be discussed, the psychologist works to help the child initiate conversations with the parent present.

  • Meet the team

Dr Liezl Addinall, a Clinical & Counselling Psychologist, founded Excelsis Psychology and leads the team. All psychologists are formally registered to practice and work in accordance with the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics and Professional Practice. The team has extensive experience conducting learning assessments (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia), behavioural assessments (ADHD) and autism assessments. The team is known for working alongside families to develop insight into children's difficulties and implementing practical strategies for home and school settings.

  • Your first visit

At the first appointment, parents are required to attend a parent intake session or join their child or teen in their first counselling session. This is important for strengthening and encouraging a healthy parent-child relationship, which can greatly assist the success of counselling. Once both the child and parent feel comfortable with the process, the psychologist will transition to one-on-one sessions with the child. Parents are also provided with regular feedback, strategies and advice to support their child or teen throughout the counselling process.
