• Our approach

  Therapy at this clinic focuses on the whole child—what inspires them to talk, how they learn, and how they express their unique personalities. Sessions explore communication across all areas, from establishing foundational language skills like eye contact and imitation to developing conversational abilities that make children effective communicators. The clinic specializes in stimulating first words and sentences, improving speech clarity, and fine-tuning language skills that enhance literacy. Sessions take place in a relaxed home-based environment where children and families feel comfortable, and where a cat and dog can help make therapy engaging and fun when appropriate. The clinician takes time to understand what makes each child tick before nurturing their path to effective communication.

• Working with families

  Family involvement is central to the clinic's approach, particularly through evidence-based parent training methods. The clinician is trained as a Hanen Certified instructor in involving parents as language facilitators, and is accredited in Parent Effectiveness Training. The clinic operates from a home-based setting designed to help parents and children feel relaxed together, and the clinician works to understand each child's family context and what inspires them to communicate. The clinician also welcomes direct contact by phone or email to discuss your child's needs and get started with therapy.

• Meet the team

  The clinic is led by Rosie Candler, a certified practising speech pathologist with 35 years of qualification and experience. She has worked with intellectually handicapped children, in community health and government settings, and managed a community clinic with over 500 children on her caseload. She has owned and run the Coastal Speech and Language Pathology Clinic for the last 25 years and maintains high standards through continued reliance on current research and knowledge. Rosie is trained in PROMPT technique and is accredited in Parent Effectiveness Training and Hanen methodology (Involving Parents as Language Facilitators). She personally assesses and treats every child at the clinic rather than referring them to other clinicians.

• Your first visit

  At the first appointment, the clinician will speak with you about your referral and then assess and treat your child personally—you won't be passed on to another clinician. The assessment process involves getting to know your child, understanding what inspires them to communicate, how they learn, and their unique personality. Once the clinician understands what makes your child tick, they can begin nurturing their journey toward effective communication. The clinic operates from a relaxed, home-based setting designed to help children and families feel at ease during this initial visit.
