About Xavier Place
Xavier has a rich history starting in the late 1940s when the Xavier Society purchased a home in Coorparoo to care for children affected by polio. Xavier's 70-year journey has evolved from hospital care to community-based support, providing a range of multi-disciplinary services for children and young people with complex disability and related health needs and their families.

Our approach
Art therapy supports children with disability through expanding creative exploration and expression, sensory investigation and regulation, with positive impacts on mental and physical health. Sessions use adaptive materials tailored to each child's needs, such as acrylic paint, poster paint, grip assistors and sensory tools. The approach is collaborative, with therapists working closely alongside occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physiotherapists and music therapists to support children's goals. Sessions are inspired by children's interests and imagination, with activities forming within sessions or through conversation with the children themselves. The focus is on creative exploration and the expression of emotions and behaviours in a supportive avenue.
Meet the team
The multi-disciplinary team at Xavier Place includes allied health, therapy and support professionals. Art therapy is provided by qualified Art Therapists such as Charlie, who studied both fine arts and psychology and pursued formal art therapy training. The team works collaboratively, with art therapists partnering with occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physiotherapists and registered music therapists. At Xavier Place specifically, the Art Therapist works alongside a registered Music Therapist to form creative arts therapy, and collaborates with the support team. The organisation has been supporting children for over 75 years with a team committed to empowering children and families.
