  • Our approach

The Hummingbird Centre offers warm, compassionate, client-centred therapies grounded in evidence-based practice. Sessions focus on helping you understand the causes of your concerns and learning tools and strategies to improve these areas of your life. A key element is forming a warm and respectful relationship with your therapist, providing a safe space away from everyday pressures where you can explore and understand yourself. Therapists are trained in a variety of modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR therapy, neurofeedback, schema therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). The centre prioritises continuous professional development to ensure therapists stay current with the latest research and best practices.

  • Working with families

The centre involves parents and carers in the therapeutic process, particularly at the first appointment where parents usually attend. The clinicians work collaboratively with families to understand their concerns and develop support plans. Families are very welcome at all four clinic locations, which feature private bathrooms, baby change facilities, and kids' activity tables to create a welcoming environment. The focus on creating a safe, collaborative environment extends to working with parents and carers as partners in their child's care.

  • Meet the team

The team includes Clinical Psychologists, Consultant Clinical Psychologists, Consultant Psychologists, Registered Psychologists, Mental Health Accredited Social Workers, and a Psychiatrist. The centre is directed by local Psychologist Alikki Russell. Named clinicians include Lachlan O'Connor (Consultant Clinical Psychologist), Ohnmar Aung (Clinical Psychologist), April Hawkes (Clinical Psychologist with over 10 years' experience), Joelle Clark (Consultant Senior Psychologist and Clinical Lead), Dr Tim Regan (Consultant Clinical Psychologist), and others. Each professional brings their own expertise while collaborating through the centre to provide tailored assessment and therapy.

  • Your first visit

The first session is a conversation about your goals and concerns, where your psychologist will ask questions, listen carefully, and explain how therapy could help. For children, parents usually attend the first appointment. Your psychologist will ask questions and listen to understand your situation and what brings you in. Together, you'll decide on next steps for support and discuss what ongoing therapy might look like tailored to your individual needs.
