• Our approach

  The practice uses evidence-based and research-informed approaches that are explicit, systematic, cumulative and structured, embedding multisensory learning throughout. Sessions are tailored to each child's individual strengths, needs and goals in a supportive, engaging and family-centred environment. Each 45-minute session includes targeted therapy or teaching, home practice activities, resources for families, and parent feedback. The philosophy centres on recognising each child as an individual learner with their own unique pathway, supported by an approach that combines speech pathology with educational expertise to help children communicate, learn and thrive.

• Working with families

  Family involvement is central to the service delivery model. Parent feedback and guidance for practising skills at home is provided in the last five minutes of each 45-minute session, ensuring parents are equipped with strategies and activities to support their child's learning. The practice emphasises creating a collaborative approach between the therapist/tutor, students, parents and teachers as essential for providing optimal learning support both at home and in the classroom. Therapy is delivered in a family-centred way, recognising that parents and caregivers play an important role in their child's progress.

• Meet the team

  The Empowered Learner is led by Jen Moloney, a Certified Practising Member of Speech Pathology Australia and an accredited NSW Primary School Teacher with over 30 years of extensive experience in the National Curriculum. Her unique dual qualification in both speech pathology and teaching allows her to support the vital connection between spoken language, reading, writing and learning. Jen holds current professional accreditations including NSW Working with Children's Check, current CPR training, Australian Tutoring Association registration, and current NESSA teacher registration, and is committed to ongoing professional development using evidence-based approaches.

• Your first visit

  During the first appointment, a full assessment aligned with the Australian Curriculum is conducted to identify your child's specific learning needs. For literacy support, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, reading fluency, reading comprehension, handwriting and writing are all assessed. Verbal feedback is provided to parents regarding their child's specific strengths and areas for improvement. Sessions run for 45 minutes and include the assessment, with the final five minutes dedicated to discussing home practice ideas, strategies and activities to support your child's learning at home.
