  • Our approach

Psychologists at Sydney Children's Practice use cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and mindfulness, adjusted to the child's age, strengths and needs. Some clinicians also use trauma-focused CBT, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), schema therapy or EMDR. Autism assessments follow the Australian national guidelines for autism diagnosis, and ADHD assessments use standardised tools such as WISC-V, WIAT-III, TOVA and the Conners 4 questionnaires.

  • Working with families

Parents and carers take part directly. The ADHD assessment starts with a 60 to 90 minute interview with parents, and parents and teachers fill in questionnaires. With your consent, the psychologist may speak with your child's teacher or observe at school. Every assessment ends with a feedback session where the psychologist goes through the written report and recommendations with you. The kids' LEGO and Minecraft groups are for children only, and parents get a summary of what was covered. Parents can also join Raising Great Kids, a 10-session group on responding to big emotions and challenging behaviour.

  • Meet the team

Clinic Director Bradley Bowen (Principal Clinical Psychologist, more than 25 years working with children and families) oversees both clinics. Psychologists who see clients at Glebe include Sonali Parikh (Senior Clinical Psychologist and Team Leader), Julia Schwarz (Senior Registered Psychologist, nearly 25 years with children and families), clinical psychologists Ker Leet Leow (speaks Mandarin), Wen Yi Ong and William Li, Clinical Psychology Registrars Felicity Martin, Julia Goodman and Amanda Au (Amanda is not taking new clients), registered psychologists Cesar Sierra (speaks Spanish), Holly Rowland and Serena Suen, and provisional psychologists Dilan Dogan, Lisa Petersen (speaks Dutch) and Mikaela Goldring. The clinic also has a therapy dog, Dolly.

  • Your first visit

New clients start with the online enquiry form on the practice website, or by calling 02 9564 3758. Before the first visit, the admin team sends forms about your child's medical, developmental and educational history and may ask for school reports or reports from other health practitioners. The first consultation runs 50 minutes: the psychologist talks with you and your child about the concerns and works out a treatment plan, and the likely number of sessions is discussed at the end. To claim Medicare, bring your GP or paediatrician's Mental Health Care Plan referral to the first visit and the practice processes the rebate.
