  • Our approach

Smart Talk's approach focuses on making learning fun and engaging for children. Sessions are tailored specifically to each child's needs and abilities, delivered in a positive environment that enables them to reach their potential. The practice believes children are more engaged when learning is fun, and therapists use evidence-based practice combined with play, movement and a range of modalities to support children's goals. Sessions can be individual or in groups, held at the offices or local schools, and range from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the child's needs.

  • Working with families

Parents are actively involved throughout the therapy process. At assessment, case history is gathered and parents provide reports on their child's development. Following evaluation, goals and treatment plans are discussed with parents to ensure alignment with family priorities. During ongoing therapy, the child's progress is continuously discussed with you session to session. Many therapists use parent and family-led therapy approaches with a strong focus on child-directed play, and work in conjunction with parents and carers to best support each child's development.

  • Meet the team

The multidisciplinary team includes Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists, all holding at least a Bachelor of Science or Master's degree in their respective fields. Speech Pathologists are registered with Speech Pathology Australia and Occupational Therapists are registered with AHPRA. The team is led by founder Catherine Morris (Principal Speech Pathologist with over 20 years' experience) and Director Lauren Miko, with additional team members bringing specialised training in areas including PROMPT therapy, Hanen programs, orofacial myology, autism assessment, feeding difficulties, and augmentative communication. The team also partners with The Feeding Clinic for children with feeding and swallowing difficulties.

  • Your first visit

At the first appointment, information about the child's development and case history is gathered. Depending on the child's age and identified difficulties, assessment may be formal or informal and can include standardised tests, direct observation of play and interaction with caregivers, reports from parents or teachers, and analysis of spontaneous speech samples. Following the evaluation, goals and a treatment plan are discussed with parents. Therapy sessions are then arranged on a weekly or fortnightly basis, with the child's progress continuously discussed with you.
