Our approach
Skills for School uses an acquisitional approach to handwriting intervention, combining instructional guidance with practice, repetition, feedback and reinforcement. Assessment takes a 'top-down' perspective, examining handwriting output in different settings like home and school, and gathering views from the child, parent and teacher to understand both handwriting performance and related abilities such as learning capacity, attention and motivation. The Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) is used to provide evidence-based, goal-centred intervention tailored to improve handwriting for primary school children. Sessions typically occur twice weekly for at least 20 sessions to support optimal progress, and work happens in real-world contexts where children can apply their learning immediately.
