  • Our approach

At Positive Pathways, therapy focuses on building a strong therapeutic relationship in a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment. Clinicians use a range of evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Positive Psychology, and play therapy techniques tailored to each child's needs. Sessions are individualised and strengths-based, with children offered developmentally appropriate, child-centred techniques. The clinic features a purpose-built therapeutic playroom to support communication and skill-building through play, which is recognised as the vehicle for child-therapist connection.

  • Working with families

Parent and caregiver involvement is integral to the clinic's approach. Family therapy and parenting support services are offered to assist with strategies that enhance child well-being, parent-child relationships, and promote a positive family environment. When appropriate, clinicians collaborate closely with schools and other agencies to support improved outcomes. The clinic recognises the importance of understanding family dynamics and works with parents and caregivers to develop tailored support that extends beyond individual child sessions.

  • Meet the team

The team includes four experienced clinical psychologists: Rachel Kershaw (Clinic Director, completed Master of Clinical Psychology at Griffith University in 2017, trained in ADOS-2 autism assessment, board-approved clinical supervisor); Helen Kershaw (Clinic Director with over 30 years of health and psychology experience, founder of the clinic in 2004, Master's degree in Non-Directive Play Therapy); Carly Roberts (PhD in Clinical Psychology, specialising in eating disorders with ANZAED credentials and experience in intensive CBT); and Rebecca Cox (Master of Clinical Psychology, AHPRA registered, experienced across community mental health and hospital settings). Kallin provides administrative support. All are trained in delivering evidence-based psychological treatments including CBT, ACT, and play therapy.

  • Your first visit

Your first appointment includes an initial intake session where the clinician will understand your child's unique experiences and therapeutic goals. The clinician will conduct a comprehensive assessment to gain insight into various aspects of your child's mental health, behaviour, and functioning. This information helps develop a suitable, individualised treatment plan tailored to your child's specific needs. The intake process establishes the foundation for the trusting therapeutic relationship that is central to positive outcomes.
