About I Can Read System
The I Can Read System is a structured, cumulative and hierarchical reading programme created by educational and cognitive psychologists based on research into reading acquisition and over 25 years of fieldwork. It teaches students to blend letters to articulate and comprehend sounds, and is taught by qualified teachers specialising in literacy. The system embodies all aspects of literacy, not just reading, and has successfully taught thousands of children to read with over 300,000 success stories in more than 200 centres worldwide.

Our approach
The I Can Read System teaches children to blend letters to sounds through a structured, cumulative and hierarchical approach that addresses all 44 phonemes in English. Sessions are designed to be interactive and engaging, with teachers introducing one new sound per lesson and showing children how to read, pronounce and spell words containing that sound. The programme is taught by university-qualified teachers specialising in literacy, and parents are asked to support their child at home with sound-letter correspondence using the I Can Read alphabet card. Learning happens in small classes where children progress at their own pace through carefully sequenced workbooks, with pronunciation and comprehension improving as they advance through the levels.
Meet the team
The I Can Read team consists of university-qualified teachers specialising in literacy. The system was developed by Annabel Seargeant, a registered educational and cognitive psychologist with post-graduate qualifications in counselling and a background in teaching literature, creative writing, public speaking and drama, and Tony Earnshaw, an educational and cognitive psychologist with a PhD on how children learn to read and over 20 years of experience teaching English in Australian schools. All teachers at licensed I Can Read Centres must be accredited in the I Can Read System, with accreditation renewed annually through updated training.
Your first visit
A free assessment is offered at the start, which for the Advanced Language and Literacy Skills programme involves a 90-minute literacy assessment designed by registered Australian educational psychologists. The diagnostic assessment protocols identify the child's literacy strengths and weaknesses, allowing the teacher to focus on the child's specific needs. For children entering other programmes like Beginner or Preliminary, the assessment determines the appropriate starting level. The assessment tools inform recommendations on behalf of your child and help establish the best pathway through the I Can Read programmes.
