Our approach
Harrisdale Mobile OT uses a tailored, family-centered approach to paediatric occupational therapy, working closely with families to create therapy sessions that cater to each child's unique needs and learning style. Sessions focus on key areas including gross and fine motor skills, sensory processing, social skills, emotional regulation, self-care, and handwriting, with a special emphasis on sensory processing approaches and emotional regulation. The therapist delivers sessions that empower children to overcome challenges and achieve greater independence, using evidence-based treatments such as The Zones of Regulation, The Alert Program, and The Feelings Thermometer. Therapy is conducted in the child's natural environments—home or school—to support practical skill development and real-world application. Each session is designed to help children reach their occupational goals through compassionate, personalized care that promotes growth and independence.
Working with families
Family involvement is central to the service model at Harrisdale Mobile OT, with the therapist working closely with families to create tailored therapy plans that meet each child's unique needs and learning style. Parents and carers are engaged in the assessment process through interviews to identify occupational goals and areas of focus for intervention. The therapist provides summary reports that can be shared with families to support communication with schools, GPs, and other health professionals, and develops personalised therapy goals that are family-oriented. Sessions are conducted in your child's home or school environment, making it easy to integrate therapy into your family's routine and supporting practical, real-world skill development.
Meet the team
The practice is led by Vanessa, a paediatric occupational therapist who completed her Occupational Therapy degree with Honours at Curtin University in 2019. She has extensive experience working closely with families to create tailored therapy plans and holds a special interest in sensory processing, having undertaken additional training in sensory processing approaches to therapy. Vanessa is passionate about working with children to develop emotional regulation skills and foster meaningful relationships, with a goal of providing compassionate and effective care that promotes growth and independence.
Your first visit
At the initial consultation, the therapist conducts a comprehensive assessment tailored to your child's specific needs and challenges. Depending on your child's situation, this may include sensory profile assessments comparing your child's sensory processing to same-aged peers, motor skill evaluations to check developmental milestones, handwriting assessments, functional capacity assessments, behavioural and emotional regulation assessments, or visual motor integration tests. The assessment process includes clinical observations and an interview with you as the caregiver to identify occupational goals and areas of focus for intervention. A summary report can be provided to share with your child's school, GP, and other health professionals involved in their care, which may also support applications for funding such as NDIS.
