• Working with families

  The practice views parents and therapists as partners in the child's care and emphasises open, honest communication about your child's progress, any behavioural changes, and concerns. Parents should share important information about their child's history, strengths and areas of concern, and be receptive to the paediatrician's insights and suggestions. The practice respects therapy confidentiality but will share pertinent information with you and provide guidance on strategies to reinforce at home. Parents are encouraged to communicate regularly via email for non-clinical enquiries and to work collaboratively with the paediatrician to develop comprehensive treatment plans that support your child's wellbeing.

• Meet the team

  The practice is led by Dr Lakshinie Gunasiri (MBBS, FRACP), a general paediatrician with expertise in developmental and behavioural problems, autism, ADHD, constipation and continence issues. She has extensive experience across Australia working with diverse communities including migrant and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, and is fluent in English and Singhalese. Dr Karen VanHaltren (MBBS, FRACP, DCH) is a neonatal paediatrician who works with babies and children from birth to 2 years, supporting with feeding and growth concerns, rashes, birthmarks, and unsettled behaviour. Both doctors embrace a family-centred approach and are committed to providing compassionate, tailored care for each child.

• Your first visit

  At the first appointment, you'll need to arrive 10 minutes early to complete paperwork and online registration. Bring your Medicare card, payment method (EFTPOS only), any previous paediatrician or specialist reports, assessment reports from allied health therapists, your child's birth record, and previous investigation results. You may be asked to wait outside depending on current waiting room policies. The paediatrician will take a detailed history, conduct an examination, and may order tests or provide paperwork for parents and school to complete. Only two adults and one child are permitted in the consultation room (except infants under 12 months) to avoid distractions.
