Our approach
Speech pathology sessions are designed to be fun, imaginative and enjoyable for children and their families. The service takes a holistic approach, working collaboratively with clients, their parents and teachers to tailor each therapy program to the individual's needs. Sessions can be delivered in home or school environments, running for 30, 45 or 60 minutes depending on the child's age and therapy goals. The team uses a variety of evidence-based therapy approaches and programs tailored to different areas of difficulty, such as the Spalding Method, Visualising and Verbalising, Makaton and the Nuffield approach.
Working with families
The providers value working closely with clients, their families, teachers and schools, believing that collaboration between all people involved with the child helps them achieve their best outcomes. Parents are involved in the development and tailoring of each therapy program to meet their child's individual needs. The team provides services not only to families but also offers screening assessments and in-services to schools and preschools to explain how speech pathologists can work with families and teachers to optimise a child's learning. Communication and partnership with families is central to the therapy approach.
Meet the team
The team consists of two experienced directors: Anneliese Cuming, who works primarily with primary and high school aged children with literacy and schoolwork difficulties, and Hayley Simmonds, who specialises in early intervention for young children with speech and language difficulties. Both are university-trained speech pathologists with extensive experience in public and private practice. Anneliese has worked in private practice in the Eastern Suburbs for five years and specialises in approaches including the Spalding Method, Thrass, Multi-Lit and Lindamood methods. Hayley has worked as a paediatric speech pathologist in Queensland schools and private practice in Sydney, with vast experience in articulation, dyspraxia, language, fluency, social skills and literacy across a range of therapeutic approaches.
Your first visit
A comprehensive speech, language and/or literacy assessment is recommended at the start of every therapy block to provide an accurate and thorough starting point. The assessment identifies your child's current strengths and weaknesses across their communicative development. Assessments can take place at home or at school and include either screening assessments (a broad, non-standardised evaluation) or comprehensive testing depending on your child's needs. A full assessment includes a detailed comprehensive report tailored to your child. You do not need a referral from a doctor to access these services.
