  • Our approach

Changes Psychology takes a solution-focused approach to helping children and families overcome common challenges through practical skill building and therapy. Sessions are tailored to individual needs and delivered in homes, schools, or child care centres, where children can feel comfortable and develop helpful relationships with their psychologist. Rather than focusing on diagnosis and labeling, the team works on developing children's and parents' awareness skills and perseverance to address life challenges. The psychologists are flexible, playful, and use strengths-based methods, with each clinician matched to families based on their approach, skills, and experience to ensure the best fit.

  • Working with families

Parents are actively involved in therapy, with the first session typically being a parent-only intake to understand the family's situation and challenges. The practice explicitly works with both children and parents, recognising that addressing individual challenges and family dynamics requires parent engagement. Psychologists help parents apply evidence-based strategies and skills within their specific family situation, rather than providing generic strategies. The team also supports families through parenting skills coaching and helps parents develop awareness and skills to manage common life challenges alongside their children.

  • Meet the team

The team includes three qualified psychologists: Julie Paton, Bianca Eastman, and Steve Rushton. Julie has a warm and practical approach to helping families with life challenges and uses a strengths-based approach with all age groups. Bianca works with families with children from infancy through early adolescence and aims to be neurodiversity affirming and strengths-based, using evidence-based therapy tailored to individual needs. Steve works primarily with adults needing support through life challenges, though he does not work with teenagers under 18 or clients with autism. The clinic matches families with the psychologist best suited to their needs and available appointment times.

  • Your first visit

The first session is usually a parent-only intake appointment, where the clinic gathers information about your child's needs and your family situation. During this initial assessment, the psychologists will review what brings you to the clinic and understand the specific challenges you're facing. This session helps the team determine which psychologist is the best match for your family and establish how they can best support you. After this intake, ongoing sessions may involve the child, parent, or both, depending on what works best for your family.
