Our approach
The approach at Blue Door Learning Support Centre is highly individualised, multi-sensory, systematic and structured, yet flexible and playful. Sessions emphasise developing a strong bond and good relationship that nurtures the whole child. Teachers use evidence-based tools, strategies and programs tailored to each student's learning needs, whether working with specific learning disorders like dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia, or supporting general learning challenges. The centre believes all students can experience success when provided with appropriate support and adjustments for their cognitive, social-emotional, physical or sensory needs.
Working with families
Communication and collaboration with parents is central to the centre's approach. Blue Door assists with communication between parents and school teachers, and advocates for students at their schools. The centre shares information, support and resources with parents, and helps clarify and summarise specialist assessment reports such as psychological, cognitive, speech/language and occupational therapy reports. Parents are invited to participate in professional development seminars and workshops to deepen their knowledge about learning difficulties, and the centre aims to foster positive working relationships to ensure the best learning outcomes for each child.
Meet the team
All Blue Door teachers are VIT registered, and most hold post-graduate qualifications in Special Education. Teachers have extensive training, knowledge and experience working with children who require intensive learning support. The team is passionate about their work and specialises in supporting learning disorders. Named team members include Jenny Vanderzweep and Kerry Anne Armstrong (highly experienced teachers in individual student development with primary school and early childhood backgrounds respectively), and Monika Sztendur (individual needs teacher and specialist in student learning and social-emotional development).
