  • Our approach

Behaviour Tonics uses a practical, evidence-based approach to help children develop self-regulation and emotional control. Sessions draw on proven cognitive behavioural coaching models and include emotion coaching techniques, with a focus on strengthening relationships between children and the adults who support them. The philosophy recognises that children need to be taught self-regulation skills through co-regulation with adults, and that every situation is unique—so strategies are tailored to the specific needs of the child, parent, or educator. Sessions aim to equip adults with practical, easy-to-implement strategies they can use immediately at home, school, or in care settings. The training emphasises building emotional intelligence and helping adults respond to children's emotions and behaviour calmly and effectively.

  • Working with families

Parents and carers are central to Behaviour Tonics' approach—the service is built on parent collaboration and practical skill-building for adults who support children. During courses and consultations, parents learn strategies they can implement immediately at home to support their child's emotional regulation and behaviour. If a child is receiving psychology services, parents typically attend sessions (at least one parent can attend individual sessions), and the psychologist can provide verbal or written reports to other professionals such as GPs, specialists, or school teachers with prior approval. The team emphasises that consistency between home and school is valuable, and can provide information to help align approaches across settings. Communication is direct and down-to-earth, with the psychologist and consultants working collaboratively with families to build insight and develop effective coping strategies.
