About Beam Academy HSC

BEAM Academy is a small-group tutoring centre on Cambridge Street, Epping. It teaches Maths and English for Years 7–12, and Physics and Chemistry for Years 9–12, from junior school work through to the HSC. Classes usually have four to six students. Lessons run at the Epping centre and as online tutoring. Printed lesson materials, topic tests and past papers are included in the fees.

The tutors are Taehoon Kim (Maths), Chris Kim (Maths and English) and Yiwei H. (Physics and Chemistry). Taehoon and Chris co-founded the academy.

Between lessons, students can post questions in their private BEAM Discord channel. Tutors check questions during working hours: Monday to Friday 3 pm to 9 pm, Saturday 9 am to 8 pm and Sunday 9 am to 5 pm. Replies are not instant.

New students start with a free diagnostic at the Epping centre: a one-hour paper, then marking and a discussion of the results and class options. Allow 1 hour 20 minutes for the visit. There is no charge and no obligation to enrol.

  • Our approach

    At Beam Academy, lessons focus on checking the working behind answers rather than just marking right or wrong. A tutor watches small groups of students and identifies skipped steps, repeated errors, and where guessing begins, then sets targeted practice that matches each mistake. Homework follows each lesson with another attempt, a short drill, or a marked response to revise. The approach stays close to what students got wrong, what their school is assessing, and what needs another attempt. Rather than generic worksheets, practice is chosen from what comes up in the diagnostic and classwork, with clear topic notes that show where marks are being lost.

  • Working with families

    Topic notes come home each week, and a topic breakdown builds up over the ten-week term so you can see what has improved. Between lessons, students can post questions in their private BEAM Discord channel.     BEAM Academy has three tutors. Taehoon Kim co-founded BEAM, teaches Maths for Years 7–12 and runs the academy's day-to-day operations. Chris Kim co-founded BEAM and teaches Maths and English for Years 7–12. Yiwei H. teaches Physics and Chemistry for Years 9–12, from Year 9 science foundations to the HSC.

  • Your first visit

    The first visit is a free diagnostic at the Epping centre. It is not a trial class. Your child completes a one-hour paper, then the tutor marks it and talks through the results with you, including which topics need more work. You then hear about suitable classes, times and fees, and decide whether to enrol. Allow 1 hour 20 minutes for the visit. There is no charge, no card details and no obligation to enrol. Book a time before you come in.
