  • Our approach

At A Speechie Speech Pathology, therapy is built on evidence-based practice with a neurodiversity-affirming approach tailored to each child's individual needs. Sessions focus on developing communication skills across areas like speech clarity, language comprehension and expression, social communication, fluency, literacy, and play. The clinicians take time to get to know each client and create a warm, welcoming environment where children feel comfortable and supported. Therapy sessions are customised in collaboration with families, using special interests to engage children and focusing on improving quality of life. Sessions involve a range of play activities and practical strategies that parents can continue at home, ensuring therapy is most effective when the child feels safe and valued.

  • Working with families

Family involvement is central to the therapy approach—as the practice states, "it takes a village to raise a child." Clinicians ensure families are fully involved in the speech pathology journey and provide parents with skills and strategies to continue developing their child's speech and language abilities independently at home. Communication with families includes comprehensive case history discussions at the initial appointment, personalised activity packs for home practice, and ongoing collaboration to establish and meet realistic, relevant goals. Homework and activity packs are provided to support families in reinforcing therapy between sessions.

  • Meet the team

The team includes ten speech pathologists with qualifications from Australian Catholic University, University of Melbourne, La Trobe University, and University of Newcastle, plus two admin staff. Team members include Aamina Shakoor (Co-Founder & Head Speech Pathologist), Elli Kyriazopulos (Clinical Lead), Alyssa Cajes (Clinical Supervisor), and senior and senior speech pathologists including Ayse Sayan, Aleyna Gumus, Zarin Cenna, Carla Vavala, Rima Abbas, Leila Smajic, and Sarjeh Elmustapha. Some clinicians have additional training such as DIR approach, and staff have experience across schools, hospitals, and private settings. All clinicians maintain a neurodiversity-affirming and evidence-based approach to their practice.

  • Your first visit

The initial appointment involves meeting with your therapist to complete a comprehensive case history, which helps the therapist select appropriate assessments for your child. During this time, the speech pathologist will conduct an informal assessment of your child's communication skills, generally involving a range of play activities. The therapist will discuss whether further formal assessments need to be done and will work with you to establish goals and create a personalised approach to therapy tailored to your child's and family's specific needs.
