Our approach
At Sydney Cognitive Development Centre, the therapy approach focuses on identifying and treating the underlying causes of cognitive, behavioural, and emotional issues rather than applying quick fixes. Sessions combine cognitive behavioural therapy with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), helping children recognise unhelpful thought patterns and develop practical strategies for meaningful living. The centre uses flexible, individualised assessment and treatment plans tailored to each child's unique profile, often incorporating brain imaging (qEEG) to guide targeted interventions like neurofeedback. For children with ADHD, a comprehensive 7-step program addresses attention, emotional, social, behavioural, language, visual processing and learning problems through school intervention, cognitive training, social skills, behaviour management and executive skills training. All therapy aims to build long-term skills rather than create ongoing dependence.
Meet the team
The Sydney Cognitive Development Centre is a multidisciplinary team of 10 experts including neuropsychologists, psychologists, speech therapists, and visual orthoptists. The centre is founded and directed by Dr Shelley Hyman, a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist with over 25 years of experience in supporting people to reach their best possible outcomes. The team conducts comprehensive assessments across cognitive, psychological, behavioural, educational, auditory and visual domains, and delivers a wide range of therapy programs including psychological therapy, cognitive training, social skills, behaviour management, speech and language therapy, and visual orthoptic training. The centre's neuropsychologists have access to one of the most extensive test libraries in NSW and conduct specialised brain imaging (qEEG) analysis to guide neurofeedback interventions.
Your first visit
At a first appointment, you have the option to start with a free 20-minute telephone consultation with a case manager to discuss your needs and determine the best path forward. If a full assessment is recommended, the centre conducts comprehensive neuropsychological testing tailored to your child's individual presentation, including cognitive tests, academic achievement, memory, attention, and often a brain scan (qEEG) to examine brain regulation patterns. The centre's neuropsychologists use an extensive test library and flexible approach, exploring specific areas of concern to identify root causes rather than relying on fixed testing batteries. If you're uncertain whether assessment or therapy is needed, the centre also offers cost-effective screening assessments that can identify common developmental and psychological problems from age 3 onwards, with ratings gathered from both home and school settings. This initial screening helps clarify whether a full assessment is necessary and what type would be most appropriate.
