About Story and Scribe

Story and Scribe is a Queensland-based literacy service founded by Miss Hugo, a primary school teacher with two years of specialist training in supporting children who struggle with reading and writing, who has worked as a specialist intervention teacher. It runs live online reading and writing classes for Prep to Year 6 in small groups of 3 to 6 children, taught by tutors from lessons the founder designs. It also offers one-on-one literacy assessments for struggling readers, in person on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane (at home or a local library) or online anywhere in Australia. The assessments are a teacher's literacy assessment, not a medical, psychological, dyslexia or speech pathology diagnosis.

  • Our approach

Story and Scribe teaches reading and writing through themed units, with a different story world for each year band, modelled texts and a clear skill focus each week. Classes are live online in small groups of 3 to 6 children. In NAPLAN and persuasive writing groups, children practise the skills the test looks for, with no promise of scores or results.

  • Working with families

After a struggling-reader assessment, parents get a written report and a weekly roadmap to follow at home or give to a tutor, plus two 30-minute follow-up calls. The site also gives parents free play-based reading activities to use at home.

  • Meet the team

The founder, Miss Hugo, is a primary school teacher with two years of specialist training in supporting children who struggle with reading and writing, and has worked as a specialist intervention teacher. She designs every lesson. Tutors teach the weekly classes, and she teaches the January holiday intensives.

  • Your first visit

For group classes, you send an enquiry with your child's year level and Story and Scribe places them in the right group. For a struggling reader, the founder first rings you for a free call, then runs a 60 to 90 minute one-on-one literacy assessment.
