Whether a student is building foundations, preparing for AMEB exams, or supporting school band work, lessons are customised to match their age, personality, and interests. The provider teaches modern drumming that keeps kids and teens motivated while developing strong technical skills and genuine love for music.

Working with families

Parents receive clear written practice notes each week detailing their child's progress and what to focus on at home. For in-home lessons, the teacher won't sit with parents present, but communication remains consistent through these written updates. For studio lessons, parents are welcome to observe the first lesson to understand how lessons work, then step back to allow focused one-on-one instruction. The provider emphasises keeping families "in the loop" so parents understand their child's development and can support practice between lessons.

Meet the team

Alistair Bennett is the founder of Onbeat Percussion and a Sydney-based drummer with over ten years of teaching experience. He studied under renowned drummer Dave Goodman and completed a Diploma in Music Performance, receiving an international scholarship to perform in Los Angeles and Austin, Texas. Before drumming, Alistair was a nationally ranked Irish dancer, placing 2nd in Australia and competing at the World Championships—a strong rhythmic foundation that shaped his teaching. He has performed with several Sydney bands at iconic venues and currently teaches private drum students aged 4–18 across Sydney's North Shore while also leading percussion ensembles at local schools.

Your first visit

At the first lesson, parents are welcome to sit in during studio sessions to get a feel for how everything works, though they won't attend subsequent sessions. The initial contact involves a conversation about your child's age, goals, and availability to find the best lesson time for your family. There is no trial lesson offered; however, if you book a term package and find Onbeat isn't the right fit after the first lesson, you'll receive a full refund for the entire term. Your teacher will provide clear written practice notes each week so you know exactly how your child is progressing.
