• Our approach

  DriverRehab's approach centres on conducting thorough occupational therapy driving assessments through evidence-based practice, tailored to each person's individual needs. The service combines a clinical assessment—which includes an interview and functional evaluation of medical background, driving history, vision, physical abilities, decision-making skills and road law knowledge—with an on-road trial in a dual-controlled vehicle lasting approximately one hour. A qualified driving instructor and driver-trained occupational therapist work together during the on-road assessment, where vehicle modifications can be trialled if needed. The team is committed to supporting clients to reach their full potential and aims to provide a personalised service to each and every person.

• Meet the team

  DriverRehab's team comprises occupational therapists and driving instructors who are all NDIS Registered Specialised Driver Training accredited. The occupational therapists are driver-trained and have extensive experience in conducting occupational therapy driving assessments, prescribing vehicle modifications and motorised devices, and managing return-to-drive programs. All team members are committed to supporting each client through evidence-based practice and providing personalised service. The team works across two locations in Perth (Hillarys and East Victoria Park) and can liaise with government agencies such as NDIS and DVA regarding funding for modifications.

• Your first visit

  Your first appointment involves a clinical assessment phase where you'll have an interview and functional evaluation covering your medical background, driving history, vision, physical abilities, decision-making and judgement skills relating to driving, and general knowledge of road law. This is followed by an on-road trial in a dual-controlled vehicle with a qualified driving instructor and driver-trained occupational therapist, which takes approximately one hour and can be conducted in either an automatic or manual vehicle depending on your needs. If vehicle modifications are required (such as steering aids, left foot accelerators or hand controls), the equipment can be fitted to the assessment vehicle and trialled during this same session.
