Our approach
Kid Sense uses a child-centred, functional approach focused on improving daily life skills through playful games and meaningful activities. Occupational therapists work on sensory processing, motor skills, self-care and regulation, while speech pathologists support communication in an inclusive "All Communication is Valid" approach. Sessions are tailored to each child's unique needs and delivered across multiple settings—clinic, home, school, preschool and community—with the aim of making therapy feel seamless and practical. The team emphasizes holistic child development and providing education and support to parents, carers and educators so skills are reinforced between appointments. Every interaction is guided by the question: how can we improve the child's daily life?
Working with families
Family involvement is central to the approach. Kid Sense provides education to parents and carers so they can support their child's development at home and reinforce therapy strategies between appointments. The team works collaboratively with families and educators, customizing therapy to suit each individual and helping families plan for important meetings such as NDIS planning sessions. Parents are partners in identifying their child's functional goals and how best to achieve them. For NDIS participants, Kid Sense also helps coordinate multiple services and support families to access appropriate resources and maintain funding for their child's ongoing progress.
Meet the team
The team includes highly experienced Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists led by Founder and Executive Director Joanna Buttfield (established 1998) and Clinical Director Tayla Manuel. With 40+ experienced therapists across six metropolitan clinics, the team is trained in key areas including sensory processing, regulation, fine and gross motor skills, speech and language, AAC, literacy and executive function. All clinicians participate in regular professional development and structured employment streams (Career Change, Return to Work, and Graduate Programs) with tailored training and supervision to ensure clinical excellence. Clinical leaders personally support and mentor their teams, and quality control measures are embedded in daily practice.
