  • Our approach

Heidi's approach blends narrative therapy with systemic thinking, viewing communication as relational rather than a skill in isolation. Sessions are thoughtful and non-blaming, exploring how family patterns and relationships shape how a young person communicates and is understood. The goal is always to leave with greater clarity about what's actually happening and a shared sense of what might help next. Every first appointment follows a clear structure: you tell your story, you work together to understand the real issue, and you make a plan with no assumptions or pressure to commit to more.

  • Working with families

Heidi sees individuals, parents, and families together, and your voice and experiences matter in every session. She listens for patterns and context, not just the presenting problem, and works collaboratively with everyone involved to understand what's really going on. Communication is always relational—she looks at how a young person communicates with the people around them and what might be making things tricky. By the end of the first appointment, you'll have a shared understanding and plan forward, with the space to decide what comes next.

  • Meet the team

Heidi is a mental health trained speech pathologist with post-graduate qualifications and experience in systemic and family therapy. She spent a number of years working in child and adolescent mental health services before moving to private practice in Townsville. She is a Certified Practising Member of Speech Pathology Australia. Her clinical background means she thinks about communication in the context of relationships and family systems rather than as an isolated skill.

  • Your first visit

The first appointment is always 90 minutes with a clear structure so you know what to expect. You'll start by telling your story at your own pace, then work together with Heidi to figure out what's really going on—whether that's communication differences, language patterns, family dynamics, or a mix. Before you leave, you'll take stock together: what does the team think is happening, and what makes sense to do about it? You decide what's next, whether that's another appointment, assessment, or whether one session was all you needed. Nothing is assumed or required beyond that first meeting.
